Bubur Cha Cha, Penang Nyonya Sweet Broth

Bubur Cha Cha from Lebuhraya Jelutong Hawker Centre (6 October 2012)

Bubur Cha Cha is a traditional Nyonya sweet broths that is quite popular in Penang. There is a variation to bubur cha cha in Penang which is called pengat, though many people regard both as one and the same, while puritans would insist that the two use slightly different ingredients.

Bubur cha cha is made with shaved ice, santan (coconut milk), sweet potatoes, taco (or yam, as it is often called here), and sago pearls. The dessert is often made by families during weekends for the enjoyment of the children. It is not often found in coffee shops, through there are a few places where you can get bubur cha cha.

It's getting harder these days to find hawkers selling Bubur Cha Cha. Still, I have come across a couple of stalling selling it. As it happens, both are in Jelutong. I created this food map to help you locate them.
