Sankt Goar is a quaint little town on the left (western) bank of the River Rhine, in the district of Rhein-Hunsrück-Kreis, in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It is located on the main portion of the Rhine Gorge, the narrow gap on the river that is today a World Heritage Site.

History of human habitation in Sankt Goar has been traced back to Roman times. During that time, it was called Wochara, after a nearby brook. In the 6th century it was renamed in honor of Saint Goar, who came from Aquitaine in France.

Today Sankt Goar is noted for its picturesque scenery and numerous tourist attractions in and around the area. Right across the river is the town of Sankt Goarshausen with its own sights as well.

How to go to Sankt Goar

The nearest city is Koblenz. From there, take Autobahn 61 heading south till Emmelshausen, then continue on country route L206 heading east till you reach Sankt Goar.
