Jalan Sekerat, at junction with Transfer Road (6 May 2008)
Jalan Sekerat, now known as Jalan A.S. Mansoor, is a short lane off Transfer Road. It curves at the end and joins with Ariffin Road.
The name Jalan Sekerat means roughly "one short road", and it doesn't deviate far from that meaning. As one of the roads off Transfer Road, Jalan Sekerat was the site of Malay and Peranakan Jawi settlements in the early 20th century. There is also an Indian Muslim presence here. Until Transfer Road was laid out in the third quarter of the 19th century, villagers get there by sampan going up the waterway that today forms part of the Forgotten Canals of George Town, all the way to the Dato Koyah Shrine.
At the junction of Jalan Sekerat is a coffee shop that carries the glamourous name of International Hotel. It provides budget lodging on the upstairs.
Getting there
Take Rapid Penang Free Shuttle Bus to Station No. 11 (Jalan Kedah). From there, walk a short distance along Transfer Road until you see International Hotel. It is at the junction turning in to Jalan Sekerat.Map of Jalan Sekerat (Jalan A.S. Mansoor)
