Kampung Kaka, George Town, Penang (1 September 2008)
Kampung Kaka is the name of a short stretch of road between Lebuh Carnarvon and Kampung Kolam in George Town, Penang. The name Kampung Kaka comes from a Malabari settlement that developed there in the 19th century. It existed right up to the beginning of the 20th century, when construction of shophouses along the road erased the village feel of the place.
Today the name Kampung Kaka remains as a street within George Town. The word Kaka comes is a polite form of address for Malabari Muslims, just as Mamak is used to address the Tamil Muslim man. Collectively they are known as the Keling (a word derived from the South Indian Kalinga Kingdom). The Kaka community worshipped at the Kapitan Keling Mosque nearby.
