Light Street Roundabout

Light Street Roundabout, George Town, Penang (21 August 2011)


Light Street Roundabout is a traffic circus in George Town, Penang. Four roads converge here namely Light Street, Beach Street, King Edward Place and Jalan Tun Syed Sheh Barakbah. The roundabout in its present form did not exist until well into the mid 20th century. In the pre-war years, the roads simply met at a junction without a proper roundabout.

At the turn of the new millennium, the Pinang Fountain was erected on the roundabout. The sculpture received a mixed response with some quarters expressing concern that it will ruin the view of the area. Nonetheless, the criticism has since died down.
