Bangi (also known as Bangi Lama) is a historical town in the Hulu Langat district of Selangor, located south of Kuala Lumpur. It bridges a mix of rural charm and modern township development, especially through nearby Bandar Baru Bangi and academic, industrial, and residential growth. 1
The town of Bangi has origins at least from the early 20th century. Around 1902-1905, the establishment of the Pekan Bangi (Bangi town) began alongside rubber estates and with the opening of the Bangi Komuter railway station. 151640 The town grew as shops, Malay, Chinese, Indian communities, agriculture (rubber, plantation) and commerce emerged. 150search1340

Over time, estate land around Bangi was gradually converted into residential townships. Bandar Baru Bangi, a newer and more planned township, emerged nearby and has become the more rapidly developing hub. 0search040
Bangi combines the traditional town centre (Bangi Lama) with expanding modern residential and commercial zones. The town proper has shophouses along the main road, small villages (kampungs) nearby, and informal local atmosphere. 402 On the other hand, townships like Bandar Baru Bangi, Seri Putra, Bukit Mahkota offer more organised housing, amenities, educational institutions, and commerce. 170search19
The town is perhaps best known for being the hometown of the Sidek family of badminton players. Jalan Sultan Abdul Samad and Jalan Sultan Alam Shah are the two main roads through Banting. The main shopping centre in Banting is a local Econsave hypermarket.
The main part of the town is located on the west side of Sungai Langat. Jambatan Banting goes across the river, taking Jalan Sultan Abdul Samad across the river to connect the main part of Banting to Telok Datok, its neighbourhood which is on an oxbow meander of Sungai Langat.
For tourists, there isn't much to see within Banting town itself. If you like the beach, you should head to Pantai Morib, while if you like history, visit the Old Royal Town of Jugra.
The property market in Bangi is active. Recent data shows that in the past 12 months, all residential transactions in Bangi had a median price around RM438,500, with 25th to 75th percentile ranging approximately RM300,000 to RM650,000. 12 Non-landed residential units (condos, apartments, etc.) have lower median prices (about RM300,000) with lower per square foot rates. 1412
Landed properties (terraced, double storey etc.) are popular, especially in townships around Bangi. Buyers are often attracted by freehold titles, relatively reasonable prices compared to KL, and proximity to institutions and industrial estates. 170search0

Bangi is the most populous federal constituency in Malaysia, with nearly 700,000 people. 36 Also, the name “Bangi” has multiple folklore origin stories (including derivations from words like “bangai” or from smells, or istana stories) though none conclusively verified. 1340
