Tropicana LRT Station

Tropicana LRT Station (SA04) is a future elevated light rail transit station on the LRT Shah Alam Line (LRT3) serving the Tropicana area in Petaling Jaya, Selangor. During the planning and construction stages of the LRT Shah Alam Line, the station was known by the interim name Lien Hoe. Although the station structure was completed together with the rest of the line, passenger services were deferred because of project cost rationalisation measures. As a result, Tropicana LRT Station is scheduled to commence operations in 2031. It is located between BU11 LRT Station (SA03) and Damansara Idaman LRT Station (SA05), and will provide an important rail connection for the Tropicana township and surrounding neighbourhoods upon opening.1

Introduction

Tropicana LRT Station forms part of the LRT Shah Alam Line connecting Bandar Utama with Johan Setia in Klang. Although the station was physically constructed together with the rest of the railway, it was not opened when the line commenced passenger operations in 2025. Instead, trains currently pass through the station without stopping until it is brought into service, which is expected to take place in 2031.2

Once operational, the station will serve the well-established Tropicana township together with nearby residential communities, commercial developments and recreational facilities. It is expected to improve public transport accessibility while supporting continued growth in northern Petaling Jaya.3

History

During the planning and early construction of the LRT Shah Alam Line, the station was identified by the interim name Lien Hoe. Before the railway entered service, it was officially renamed Tropicana LRT Station to reflect the prominent township that it is intended to serve.4

In 2018, the LRT Shah Alam Line underwent a major cost rationalisation exercise aimed at reducing overall project expenditure. As part of this review, several stations, including Tropicana, were deferred from immediate operation even though their structures continued to be built. This approach reduced initial operational costs while preserving the option of opening the station when passenger demand justified it.5

Following subsequent government reviews, the station remained part of the long-term operating plan and is scheduled to enter passenger service in 2031 after the completion of the necessary railway systems, station fit-out and operational commissioning.6

Station Location

Tropicana LRT Station is located in the Tropicana area of Petaling Jaya, Selangor. The surrounding neighbourhood is characterised by established residential communities, commercial developments, offices and recreational facilities. Upon opening, the station will provide residents with convenient rail access to destinations throughout Petaling Jaya, Shah Alam and Klang.7

The station is also expected to support future transit-oriented development by encouraging higher-density residential and commercial projects within walking distance of the station, reducing dependence on private vehicles.8

Tropicana LRT Station will be served exclusively by the LRT Shah Alam Line (LRT3). The line provides an important east-west rail corridor linking Bandar Utama, Petaling Jaya, Shah Alam and Klang before terminating at Johan Setia.9

Although trains currently operate between BU11 and Damansara Idaman without stopping, Tropicana LRT Station will become the intermediate operational station once it opens in 2031. Passengers travelling towards Bandar Utama will also be able to interchange with the MRT Kajang Line at the northern terminus of the LRT Shah Alam Line.10

Station Design

Tropicana LRT Station is an elevated station built to the same architectural standards as the other stations on the LRT Shah Alam Line. The station incorporates a contemporary design with sheltered public areas, spacious concourses and natural ventilation suited to Malaysia's tropical climate.11

The station features an island platform, allowing passengers travelling in either direction to board trains from a single central platform. This configuration improves passenger circulation while making efficient use of the available station footprint.12

Like the other stations on the LRT Shah Alam Line, Tropicana LRT Station has been designed as a fully accessible public transport facility. Barrier-free features include lifts, wheelchair-accessible fare gates, tactile guidance paths and step-free access between all public areas of the station.13

Future Operations

Once the station becomes operational in 2031, it is expected to significantly improve rail accessibility for the Tropicana area by reducing the distance that residents need to travel to reach the LRT network. It will also relieve passenger demand at neighbouring stations while providing more direct access to residential and commercial developments in the vicinity.14

The opening of Tropicana LRT Station will complete this section of the northern LRT Shah Alam Line as originally planned, ensuring that all stations between Bandar Utama and Damansara Idaman are fully operational and available to passengers.15
