About PWCC — background & history

PWCC forms a core component of The Light Waterfront / The Light City masterplan, a large waterfront redevelopment by IJM and partners that includes retail, hotels, promenades and residential components. The PWCC was developed as a modern MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, Exhibitions) hub to raise Penang’s capacity to host international business events and cultural shows. The centre is being positioned to complement existing Penang venues and to attract larger international conventions to the island. 4

Facilities & layout

PWCC’s design emphasises large, column-free spaces and flexibility — ideal for exhibition stands, large banquets, theatre-style conferences and concert staging. The complex also provides a range of meeting and pre-function spaces, plus a prominent seafront terrace for outdoor receptions and premium events. 1

Exhibition & convention halls (pillarless)

The centre contains 5 pillarless halls with removable partitions so organisers can combine halls for larger shows or keep them separate for simultaneous events. The hall specifications (floor area and dimensions) are:

Hall 1

Area: 961 sqm
Dimensions (L × W × H): 26.4m × 35.7m × 10m

Hall 2

Area: 1,474 sqm
Dimensions: 39.5m × 35.7m × 10m

Hall 3

Area: 2,443 sqm
Dimensions: 66m × 35.5m × 10m

Hall 4

Area: 964 sqm
Dimensions: 26.4m × 35.7m × 10m

Hall 5

Area: 1,476 sqm
Dimensions: 39.5m × 35.7m × 10m

Together these halls give PWCC a combined exhibition / hall footprint of 10,443 sqm, giving organisers the flexibility to run complex, multi-track MICE programmes. 1

Le Grand Bleu — seaview terrace & private rooms

One of PWCC’s signature features is the waterfront terrace Le Grand Bleu, an outdoor event terrace offering sweeping sea views — perfect for cocktails, gala dinners, product launches or festival-style activations.

The terrace can be configured for formal set-ups or free-standing cocktail receptions, and the smaller private rooms are ideal for VIP functions, corporate breakout sessions or press events. 2

Meeting rooms & support spaces

PWCC also provides 19 meeting rooms and a number of flexible pre-function and breakout areas. Several meeting rooms include removable partitions so multiple small rooms can be combined into larger boardrooms or training suites. These rooms are aimed at seminars, corporate meetings, government briefings and smaller private gatherings. 1

Types of events hosted

Because of its range of hall sizes and supporting rooms, PWCC can serve:

Different organisers can rent separate halls to run distinct events concurrently — a strong operational advantage for a busy MICE calendar. 1

All five exhibition halls are located on Level 5 of the convention centre. To facilitate large-scale event setups, PWCC is equipped with a dedicated vehicle access system - a ramp that allows trucks to drive all the way up to Level 5. This enables exhibitors and contractors to transport booths, staging equipment, props and other heavy items directly to the exhibition halls without relying solely on freight elevators. Hall 3, the biggest hall, is fitted with roller shutters that can be lifted to allow loading trucks to enter the halls themselves, making loading and unloading highly efficient. This logistical design ensures smooth setup and dismantling operations for exhibitions, trade fairs, concerts and conventions.

Management, partners & role in Penang’s MICE ecosystem

The PWCC project is part of a wider waterfront regeneration and tourism strategy. Management and operational partnerships have been announced to give the centre international reach and best practices in venue operations. Strategic alliances with experienced global operators aim to attract large-scale international exhibitions and conferences to Penang, raising the island’s competitiveness as a MICE destination. 9

Accessibility & nearby amenities

Located within The Light Waterfront development, PWCC sits beside retail, hotel and promenade components designed to support delegates and visitors — including on-site or adjacent hotels, F&B, and a long sea-facing promenade. It benefits from good vehicular access to the Penang Bridge and proximity to central George Town, making transfers from the airport and city straightforward for national and international attendees. 4

Booking & enquiries

For event enquiries, booking options, technical specifications, catering menus and site inspections, organisers should contact PWCC’s official venue team. The venue team typically provides full MICE support: site planning, technical production, AV and logistics. 1

Fun fact

Fun fact: PWCC’s waterfront terrace, Le Grand Bleu, is large enough to host outdoor-style receptions and festival activations while still offering direct views of the Penang Channel — giving attendees an outdoor seafront experience without leaving the convention complex. 2
