Java Road, Singapore (26 July 2017)
Java Road is a minor road in downtown Singapore. Located in Kallang, it connects Beach Road with Nicoll Highway. Java Road is located beside The Concourse. The entrance to the pedestrian bridge for the Nicoll Highway MRT Station is located next to it.
What we have of present-day Java Road is but a rump version of what it once was, when it was part of the Malay village of Kampong Sumbawa1 That village once occupied the area between North Bridge Road and Beach Road, which is now occupied by HDB flats. The name Java Road was taken from Stamford Raffles and Lord Minto's Java expedition of 1811. The Hokkiens in Singapore called that road (in Taiji Romanisation) Paek3 Thak3 Kay1
(White Pagoda Street) and Sio1 Pho3 Phak1 Ciok3 Kay1 (Minor Town Stonemason Street).
