The station is located at the junction of Scotts Road and Bukit Timah Road in Singapore, near Newton Circus. 1 It lies within the Newton / Novena Planning Area in Singapore’s Central Region and falls under Postal District 11, covering neighbourhoods such as Newton, Novena and parts of Orchard Road fringe. 1
The North–South Line station at Newton was opened on 12 December 1987 as part of the extension of the line. 1 The station later became an interchange with the opening of the Downtown Line portion on 27 December 2015. 1
Newton MRT Station serves two lines: the North–South Line and the Downtown Line. 1 On the North–South Line the station code is NS21; the preceding station towards Jurong East is NS20 Novena and the next station towards Marina South Pier is NS22 Orchard. 1
On the Downtown Line the station code is DT11; the preceding station towards Bukit Panjang is DT10 Stevens and the next station towards Expo is DT12 Little India. 1
Although the station does not have a full bus interchange structure, multiple bus stops are situated directly outside the station exits along Scotts Road and Bukit Timah Road (for example Bus Stop 40189 at Scotts Road Exit B) offering routes such as 5, 54, 124, 143, 167, 48, 67, 170, 960 and 972M. 3
The station is located at the doorstep of the Newton Food Centre, a famed hawker centre. It is also within walking distance to Orchard Road’s shopping belt and is surrounded by residential high-rises, office towers (such as Goldbell Towers) and educational institutions. 1
Due to construction and depth constraints, transferring between the two lines at Newton requires exiting the fare gates, walking through a 56 metre public under-pass and re-entering within a 15-minute window — one of the only such arrangements in Singapore’s MRT network. 3
Moreover, the station is also one of the underground MRT stations designated as a civil-defence shelter, with reinforced structural walls, blast doors and emergency systems built during its original construction. 3
With its dual-line interchange role, central city-fringe location and proximity to an iconic food destination, strong Newton MRT Station stands as a highly accessible transport node blending utility and character. Whether you’re visiting the Newton Food Centre, commuting across lines or shopping around Orchard, the station delivers both connectivity and convenience in one of Singapore’s most active precincts.
