Senoko West is a subzone within the Woodlands Planning Area of Singapore. Located in the northern region of the island, it is closely associated with industrial activities and logistics, forming part of the larger Senoko industrial belt. Though it does not have a recorded residential population, it plays an important role in supporting Singapore’s economy through warehousing, port-related services, and manufacturing.

Quick Facts

Name and Etymology

The name “Senoko” (实里达, Shílǐdá in Chinese, though “Senoko” itself originates from Malay) is believed to derive from “Sungai Senoko,” a river that once flowed in the northern part of Singapore before land reclamation. The word reflects the area’s historical association with water bodies and coastal activities. “West” is a directional reference to distinguish it from other Senoko subzones.

History

Senoko West developed in tandem with Singapore’s northern industrial expansion during the late 20th century. The subzone became part of the larger Senoko Industrial Estate, which was created to decentralise industrial activity away from the central areas of Singapore. Today, it remains home to logistics centres, warehouses, and specialised industrial facilities that support both domestic needs and cross-border trade with Malaysia.

Geography and Boundaries

Senoko West is situated inland from the Straits of Johor, bordered by Senoko North to the north, Senoko South to the east, Woodlands East to the south, Greenwood Park to the west, and North Coast to the northwest. Its compact geography is mainly occupied by industrial estates and supporting infrastructure.

Population and Demographics

As of 2024, Senoko West does not have a resident population recorded in official statistics. The area is largely zoned for industrial use rather than housing. However, it is frequented daily by workers employed in factories, logistics companies, and warehouses.

Land Use and Character

The subzone is dominated by industrial land use. Facilities within Senoko West include logistics hubs, cold storage warehouses, and light manufacturing plants. It forms part of Singapore’s northern industrial corridor, complementing the activities of neighbouring subzones such as Senoko South and North Coast. The area is characterised by heavy vehicle traffic, container yards, and large industrial compounds.

Transport and Connectivity

Senoko West benefits from connectivity to the broader road network of Woodlands. Major arterial roads link the subzone to the Bukit Timah Expressway and Seletar Expressway, ensuring efficient transport of goods. The nearest MRT station is Woodlands North MRT Station on the Thomson-East Coast Line, though most travel to and from the area relies on buses and private transport. Its proximity to the upcoming Johor Bahru–Singapore RTS Link terminal further enhances its logistical importance.

Community and Amenities

Unlike residential subzones, Senoko West does not feature large-scale community amenities such as schools, hospitals, or shopping malls. Instead, its facilities are tailored to the needs of workers, including canteens, service outlets, and rest areas within industrial complexes. Nearby residential areas in Woodlands East and Greenwood Park provide access to essential amenities for workers living outside the industrial estate.

Neighbourhood Identity

Senoko West is strongly identified with its industrial character. It plays a crucial role as part of the northern economic belt of Singapore, contributing to logistics, food processing, and cross-border trade. Its identity is less residential and more economic, with warehouses and industrial compounds defining its landscape.

Interesting Sights

While Senoko West does not feature tourist attractions, it has notable industrial landmarks such as large-scale warehouses and distribution hubs. The area’s bustling industrial activity offers a glimpse into Singapore’s behind-the-scenes logistics operations that sustain the nation’s food supply chain and export economy.

Real Estate

Senoko West is not a residential zone, and therefore, housing is virtually non-existent within the subzone. However, the nearest HDB estates in Woodlands East and Greenwood Park provide accommodation for many workers employed in the Senoko area.

As of Q3 2024, resale prices for HDB flats in nearby Woodlands averaged around SGD 420,000–560,000 for 4-room units and SGD 500,000–650,000 for 5-room units1. Rental prices ranged from SGD 2,000 to 2,800 per month depending on flat type. No private condominiums are located within Senoko West itself, as the land is designated primarily for industrial purposes.

Fun Fact

Senoko West is part of the area that supplies Singapore with much of its cold storage capacity, including facilities for imported frozen foods, making it an unseen but vital link in the nation’s food security chain.
