Yeng Keng Café & Bar (2 March 2018)
Yeng Keng Café & Bar (GPS: 5.41911, 100.33486) is a period-style café along
Chulia Street in
George Town, Penang. Created to add a touch of class to an otherwise backpacker street, Yeng Keng Café is a manifestation of the on-going gentrification of Chulia Street. It is adjacent to
Yeng Keng Hotel, also by the same management.
Yeng Keng Café & Bar offers a menu that takes diners back a few decades, when the best chefs of Penang were drawn from the Hainanese community. Hence you can find here a fusion of Hainanese fare with Western cuisine.
Yeng Keng Café & Bar is housed in a double-storey
Straits Eclectic-style shophouse (with Art Deco elements) constructed in the 1930s. The façade of the upper floor an arched casement window flanked by fluted Ionic pilasters, themselves flanked by square windows (originally with wooden louvres). At either ends are rusticated pilasters. The
Art Deco-style parapet is topped with a flag pole.
