Underground City, as its name suggests, is a labyrinth of tunnels under Beijing, China. The tunnels were dug in the 1960's, at the height of the Sino-Soviet rift, as a means of defence and protection. In this subterranean world space was alloted for hospitals and stockpile of food. However, thankfully, the Underground City was never used.

The tunnels were said to have been dug by hand. There is a rumour that one of the tunnels stretch from the Communist Party Headquarters to the Western Hills. The distance is 12 km. It was dug to enable party leaders a quick exit in the event of a catastrophe.

Today the Underground City remains as a disused maze under Beijing. Tours are now organised for visitors to have a glimpse of the dank tunnels. It is not advisable to wander there on your own.

How to reach the Underground City

The easiest access to the Underground City is at Xi Damo Hutong, the alley to the southeast of Qian Men. Take the Metro to the Qian Men station. Once again, it's best to join a tour to visit these tunnels.
