LRT Kelana Jaya Line

LRT Kelana Jaya Line is one of the busiest urban rail routes within the Kuala Lumpur transport network, operated by Rapid KL. It connects Putra Heights in the south to Gombak in the north, serving both the heart of Kuala Lumpur and its surrounding suburbs with a modern, driverless light rail system1.

Quick Facts

History of the LRT Kelana Jaya Line

The LRT Kelana Jaya Line began operations in 1998 as the PUTRA LRT (Projek Usahasama Transit Ringan Automatik). It was the first fully automated rail system in Malaysia and one of the earliest in Southeast Asia. In 2002, Prasarana Malaysia Berhad assumed ownership and operations, integrating the line under the Rapid KL network2.

In 2016, the line was extended from Kelana Jaya to Putra Heights, connecting with the LRT Sri Petaling Line at its southern terminus. This expansion created a seamless interchange between the two systems, significantly improving accessibility across the Klang Valley3.

Route and Coverage

Spanning nearly 46 kilometres, the LRT Kelana Jaya Line passes through some of the most densely developed and economically vital areas in Kuala Lumpur. The route connects suburban areas like Kelana Jaya and Subang Jaya with major city landmarks such as KLCC, Pasar Seni, and Masjid Jamek4.

Connections and Accessibility

The LRT Kelana Jaya Line integrates seamlessly with multiple major transit systems. At KL Sentral, passengers can interchange with KTM Komuter, KLIA Transit, and the MRT Kajang Line. At Masjid Jamek, commuters can transfer to the LRT Ampang Line and LRT Sri Petaling Line. The southern terminus at Putra Heights also connects directly to the LRT Sri Petaling Line, enabling easy travel across Kuala Lumpur’s eastern and southern corridors5.

For those arriving by car, key expressways near the line include the Federal Highway (FT2), Lebuhraya Damansara–Puchong (LDP, E11), and Maju Expressway (MEX, E20), which provide convenient access to stations in both urban and suburban areas6.

Characteristic and Commuter Experience

The LRT Kelana Jaya Line operates with fully automated trains manufactured by Bombardier. Its high-frequency service and reliability make it the backbone of Kuala Lumpur’s rapid transit system. Train frequency averages 2.5–5 minutes during peak hours and 7–10 minutes during off-peak periods7.

The line primarily serves mixed-use urban zones, combining office towers, universities, residential apartments, and retail centres. Major ridership clusters include the areas around KLCC, Universiti Malaya, and Kelana Jaya.

Interesting Sights Along the Line

The LRT Kelana Jaya Line provides access to several of Kuala Lumpur’s best-known attractions. Among them are the Petronas Twin Towers (via KLCC station), Central Market and Petaling Street (via Pasar Seni station), and Mid Valley Megamall (accessible from Abdullah Hukum station). Further south, the Subang Jaya and Glenmarie stops connect commuters to shopping, dining, and entertainment hubs8.

Fun Fact

The LRT Kelana Jaya Line was the first in Malaysia to operate with driverless technology and platform screen doors at all underground stations. Its control centre in Subang Depot continuously monitors train operations, ensuring efficiency and safety — a model later adopted by the MRT Kajang Line and other systems9.
