Jalan Loke Yew, Kuala Lumpur (May 2024)Jalan Loke Yew is one of the major roads in Kuala Lumpur. Located on the southeast side of the city, it connects Jalan Maharajalela in the north with Jalan Cheras in the south.
Among the roads branching off from Jalan Loke Yew include Jalan San Peng, Jalan Nilam, Jalan Jubilee, Lorong Loke Yew, Jalan Sungai Besi, Jalan Yew, Jalan Chan Sow Lin, Jalan Lombong, and Sungai Besi Expressway (E9). Jalan Loke Yew, originally Loke Yew Road, was named after 19th century tycoon and philantropist Loke Yew, who was born Wong Loke Yew in China in 1845.1 Arriving in Malaya at the age of 13, he started work as a servant in a shop on Market Street in Singapore, and from there worked his way up to become the richest man in British Malaya. After making his fortune, Loke Yew donated generously to various causes. In addition to Jalan Loke Yew and Lorong Loke Yew in Kuala Lumpur, Loke Yew Street in Singapore was also named after him.
