St Mary's Orthodox Syrian Cathedral, Brickfields (8 July, 2016)
St Mary's Orthodox Syrian Cathedral (GPS: 3.12765, 101.68256), also called the Cathedral of St. Mary the Theotokos, is an Oriental Orthodox church in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur. The church is part of the Diocese of Chennai of the Malankara Orthodox Church.
Most of the believers worshipping at this church trace their forefathers to Indians (to be precise, Malayalees) who arrived in Malaya in the early 20th century. Their church is said to have been established by the Apostle Thomas, who had arrived in Kerala, India, in AD52. Christians belonging to this church follow Oriental Orthodoxy, and are neither Protestants nor Roman Catholics. Services at this church is conducted in Malayalam.
The first Orthodox priest to arrive in Malaya to serve at this church was Rev. Fr. Alexios OIC, in 1928.1 The present building was erected in 1956, for the then St Mary's Orthodox Syrian Church. In 1996, the church was given cathedral status, and named the Cathedral of St Mary the Theotokos.
