Jalan Sultan, Kuala Lumpur

Jalan Sultan, Kuala LumpurJalan Sultan, Kuala Lumpur (6 July, 2016)

Jalan Sultan is a street in the inner city of Kuala Lumpur. It forms the shape of the letter "J", with the north end connected to Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock, where it continues as Jalan Tun Tan Siew Sin; and the west end continues as Jalan Sultan Mohamed. That cornering is the Pasar Seni Bus Terminal. Just before the terminal, Jalan Sultan curves to the north to become Jalan Hang Kasturi.

Jalan Sultan was originally Sultan Street. It was named in honour of Sultan Abdul Samad (1804-1898)1. This came about because Sultan Abdul Samad once had a palace nearby. Around the 1880s, the British colonial government tried to get the sultan to move to Klang, as the British Resident of Selangor was residing there. But Sultan Abdul Samad preferred his palace in Jugra, so he dragged his feet over the matter, and the palace in Klang did not get built during his reign. It was only after his demise that the subsequent sultan moved to Klang.
